One special dish is Vegan's Delight in the Vegetable Dishes section of the menu. They describe it as "TOTALLY VEGETARIAN. (Perfect for Vegans) Mixed veggies cooked with special vegetarian oyster sauce. Also check out the Lighter Fare section. They offer real, whole brown rice as an alternative to the ubiquitous white rice of standard Asian diets here and abroad. And most recently they have opened a sushi bar so you can get Edamame appetizers (green soybeans) as well as probably some vegetarian sushi. Directions: Route 114 into Marblehead from Salem. We haven't eaten here yet, but they have several recipes marked with an asterisk which is footnoted as "veggi dish" and seems to be tofu or vegetable based. These include soups, salads, starters, teriyake, tempura, curry, sukiyaki, tempura in noodle soup, stir fried noodles, sushi & sashimi, maki and several of the luncheons. Directions: Route 114 into Marblehead from Salem. Take a right at Smith Street which is a light. The restaurant is on your right about a block down before the post office.

Dinner Hours -- 5:00 - 10:00 pm Sunday Dinner only -- 5:00 - 10:00 pm Comments: Thai food, look for the vegetarian and vegan items. Ask about chicken stock, what oils are used in the dishes, saltiness if these things are a concern. They can accomodate. Especially nice: you can choose real brown rice, it is not just fried white rice. Note that they no longer have the sushi bar so no more edamame appetizer at least for now. Directions: Washington Street runs through the old Riley Plaza in Salem, the center of town near the Post Office and the train station. They are located across from Salem City Hall. Fantasy Island Address: 516 Loring Avenue Salem, MA 01970 Phone: 978-745-1700 Hours: (check) Comments: Restaurant, Take Out, Catering and Bar. An establishment that bends over backwards to accommodate vegetarian needs. They will make subsitute "lobster sauce" dishes with vegetarian ground round that you supply. Also look for an enormous vegetarian appetizer, wantons filled with vegetables. You'll have to ask about these too, I could not spot them on the menu. Most items are entirely vegan, but watch out for milk in some of the drinks (ask!) and ice cream. They don't seem to have a web page. You can check out their menu: p.1, p.2, p.3, p.4, p.5, p.6. Directions: Take the Orange Line to the Chinatown stop. You will come up to the street on Washington St. Walk a block or so away from downtown. Turn left onto Beach street--you should already be able to see the restaurant on the far side of Beach.
Grasshopper Address: 1 North Beacon Street Allston, MA 02134 Phone: 617-254-8883 Hours: (check) Comments: Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant which has meat substitutes masquerading as meat. Warning: you have to specify when you order if you do not want MSG in your food. No web page that I could find nor an online menu. There's lots of variety and lots of different vegetables used, they do offer brown rice alternative. Directions: Take the Green line B train to the Harvard stop in Allston. The train will be running on Commonwealth Ave, go back to Harvard and turn left (north) for two minutes to Brighton. At Brighton, turn left (west) and walk 2 more minutes to where it intersects with Cambridge Street and becomes North Beacon. Look on the right on the far corner of that intersection and you can see the restaurant.
